WATCH: VMWorld 2018 Day One Recap
VMWorld 2018 kicked off in Las Vegas on Monday. Here’s what you might have missed from day one:
AWS CEO Andy Jassy joined Pat Gelsinger on the main stage and announced a new service, Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) on VMware. Last year, the companies announced VMware Cloud on AWS that essentially allowed partners and customers to move on-premises virtual machines into Amazon’s cloud. Amazon RDS on VMware aims to make it easier for network administrators to run their databases across more servers. Gelsinger says the mission is to create a unique, hybrid computing platform.

“We are building a hybrid future because that’s what customers want,” said Gelsinger. “Cloud customers and cloud partners say this is really a bilateral relationship that’s fusing our technologies together in a way that customers get extraordinary benefit from.”
In another move, Gelsinger showed off a VMware tattoo:
Like I said in my keynote, sometimes what happens in Vegas does not stay here… had to show my VMware spirit in honor of our 20th birthday. Show me your VMware spirit! #VMworld #VMware pic.twitter.com/ZBJPLijZoq

VMWare also announced the acquisition of Boston-startup CloudHealth Technologies, which will soon become available for VMware channel partners to sell. CloudHealth delivers a cloud operations platform across AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. The platform enables customers to help analyze and manage cloud cost, usage, security, and performance centrally for native public clouds. Gelsinger says the virtualization leader will add several VMware components into the platform, such as Wavefront analytics, to create a suite of services that channel partners will be able to sell.

VMWare also took a jab at Cisco on Monday, unveiling new innovations for its NSX networking and security portfolio. VMware NSX-T Data Center 2.3 extends advanced multi-cloud networking and security capabilities to AWS, in addition to Microsoft Azure and on-premises environments. This connectivity will empower customers that operate across multiple public clouds to take advantage of local availability zones and the services of different cloud providers.
