Nutanix Acquires Frame To Boost Desktop, VDI And Multi-Cloud Offerings

Red-hot hyper-converged pioneer Nutanix plans to acquire cloud-based desktop and application delivery specialist Mainframe2, known as Frame, in a move to enhance its multi-cloud solutions and deliver Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) to customers.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company said in a blog post Friday that Frame will enable Nutanix to make DaaS available within its Nutanix Xi Cloud Services, which will support one-click desktop instances on Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

"We are committed to providing our customers with a robust multi-cloud DaaS offering through Frame while working with our partners to enable best-in-class enterprise VDI," said Sunil Potti, chief product and development officer at Nutanix, in a statement. "Frame's cloud-native technology represents everything we believe to be true in the market -- customers want easy-to-use, high-performance and cost-optimized solutions that just work across the entirety of their infrastructure."

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Nutanix said Frame will address customers' needs for DaaS in the midmarket, while continuing to support large-scale VDI environments. Frame's technology will also be extended to Google Cloud Platform.

"Imagine the possibilities, with the planned one-click simplicity of Nutanix Xi Cloud Services, attached to Frame's compelling DaaS offering, that did not have any cloud lock-in," said Nutanix in its blog post. The company said Frame, founded in 2012, has built a born-in-the-cloud DaaS solution that can be delivered from almost any cloud.

Frame's web-scale architecture incorporates auto-scale functionality, providing impressive performance at any scale, while natively supporting multiple tenants with complete isolation of users, desktops and data. Frame, named one of Gartner's 2016 Cool Vendors in Endpoint Computing, was built from the ground up to support multi-cloud delivery models, allowing IT teams to deliver virtual desktops from public clouds and their own enterprise data center – with common tooling and management constructs, according to Nutanix.

"Launching Frame as a Nutanix Xi Service will be an exciting step in this journey, and we look forward to disrupting yet another layer of the enterprise stack – to bring cloud-scale desktops and apps, powered by a one-click user and admin experience to everyone," said Nutanix in its blog.
