Splunk Acquires IP, Technology Assets From Analytics Software Startup Rocana

Splunk Monday said it has acquired technology and IP assets from analytics software and machine-learning startup Rocana.

San Francisco-based Splunk plans to leverage Rocana's technology to advance its machine data platform and machine-learning capabilities across Splunk's entire portfolio. Several technical employees from Rocana will be joining Splunk, including Rocana's co-founder and CTO, Eric Sammer.

"Adding Rocana's team demonstrates Splunk's commitment to innovate -- through a build, buy and partner approach -- as we better serve our customers and partners around the world," said Richard Campione, chief product officer of Splunk, in a statement. "We are always interested in adding great talent to Splunk, particularly a team such as Rocana's with experience in large-scale data systems and open-source technologies."

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Rocana is a privately held startup founded in 2014 by veterans hailing from Cloudera, Vertica and Experian.

The company's Rocana Ops solution captures and analyzes all data from all sources, keeping it online and available for instant and future access, according to its website. By combining event data warehouse capabilities with advanced machine learning, Rocana said Ops gives technologists the ability to see emerging issues anywhere in the environment, minimize security risks and surface opportunities for innovation.

"Splunk is the most widely adopted machine data and analytics platform in the market today," said Sammer in a statement. "We are thrilled to join the Splunk team and help contribute to its vision of helping customers turn data into answers."

Splunk recently expanded the machine data capabilities of its operational data software with new releases of its Splunk Enterprise, IT Service Intelligence and User Behavior Analytics applications.
