Red Hat Eyes Enhanced Container Strategy With Acquisition Of Startup NooBaa
Open-source software powerhouse Red Hat has acquired storage software startup NooBaa and will fold the company into its existing storage portfolio with an eye toward enhancing its container strategy.
Ranga Rangachari, Red Hat vice president and general manager of storage and hyper-converged infrastructure, said in a blog Tuesday morning that the company intends to use NooBaa's technology to bring a "comprehensive set of data services" to its storage portfolio, including Red Hat Ceph Storage and Red Hat OpenShift Container Storage.
"We believe that the combination of data resiliency features and greater ease of data migration between cloud providers adds to Red Hat's value proposition around application portability," Rangachari wrote.
The integration with the OpenShift Container Platform will allow developers to create data-driven applications more efficiently and take advantage of NooBaa's services while providing a consistent experience across platforms.
NooBaa's software manages data across hybrid cloud environments and allows data to be written and moved across environments without sacrificing customers' ability to see and access it. The company was established in 2013 and is based in Boston. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Raleigh, N.C.-based Red Hat's acquisition of NooBaa comes on the same day that HPE acquired big data analytics firm BlueData. HPE said BlueData software will be folded into its Apollo systems and professional services to allow customers to gain insights from data across various on-premises, cloud and hybrid environments.
IBM earlier this month agreed to acquire Red Hat in a blockbuster $34 billion deal.
