30 Notable IT Executive Moves: June 2014
Start It Off
June kicked off the summer with a number of executive shuffles from big channel companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell, CSC, Ciber, Avaya and more. Let's take a look at these moves.
Todd Bradley
After leading Hewlett-Packard's PC business for eight years, Todd Bradley has moved to business intelligence software maker TIBCO Software at the company's new president. Bradley's most recent role at HP was executive vice president of strategic growth initiatives, a position he held for a year after moving from his role as executive vice president of Printing & Personal Systems. Solution providers said that the move was a great one for TIBCO and they expect to see a lot of growth for the $1.1 billion company under Bradley's leadership.
Joe Lohmeier
Avaya announced that Joe Lohmeier would be taking the helm of its channel program as the new vice president of US Channel Sales. The appointment is in conjunction with tweaks to Avaya's Connect Channel Partner Program. The former VMware executive replaced Karl Soderlund, who left the company in March for Aruba Networks. Lohmeier served as VMware vice president of America Sales for two years, and before that spent 12 years at Cisco as director of sales among other positions.
Michael Boustridge
Ciber made Michael Boustridge its newest president and CEO as it continues extensive restructuring efforts. Boustridge replaced former President and CEO Dave Peterschmidt, who held the positions since 2010. Boustridge joined the solution provider, which is No. 38 on CRN's 2014 SP 500 list, in 2012 as a member of the board of directors after previously holding top executive positions at Contact Solutions, BT Global Services and EDS. The company said that Peterschmidt will work with Boustridge "to ensure a seamless transition."
Peterschmidt is not the company's first top executive shuffle of the year, following up on the January departure of executive vice president and COO Richard Genovese.
Garrett Jones
After helping orchestrate many changes to the Symantec worldwide channel program over the past few months, worldwide channel chief Garrett Jones has left the software company. Jones will lead the development of a channel program for Spanning, a cloud-based services backup startup in Austin, Texas. Jones, who had been with Symantec since 2006, told CRN that his primary reason for leaving was to spend more time with his Austin-based family and work for a smaller company.
Zachary Mandeville, Symantec manager of marketing strategy and operations, will serve as interim leader of Global Channel Operations, the company said.
Lisa Su
Advanced Micro Devices shook up its executive team as part of the company's restructuring efforts, naming Lisa Su as the company's new COO. The restructuring is an effort by the company to focus more aggressively on what it determined to be "high-growth" areas in the chip market, such as embedded devices. AMD was hit hard by the declining PC market and has been working to change its image and step away from almost complete reliance on PC sales.
Su previously served as AMD general manager for global business units and will now be in charge of the company's new Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom Business Group. She starts her new role July 1.
David Marcus
Facebook made a serious foray into the mobile payment space with the hiring of former PayPal President David Marcus to head up the social media company's Facebook Messenger. Partners said the hiring move was a significant one for Facebook, showing the company recognized the importance of the mobile payment industry, a trend they expect to hit the channel soon. Marcus was president of PayPal's board of directors for two years it bought Zong, the mobile payments company Marcus founded and headed up as CEO. Marcus said he made the move to Facebook after founder Mark Zuckerberg presented a "compelling vision about mobile messaging" and a desire to work on a product from the ground up.
Preston McAfee
Former Google Director of Strategic Technologies Preston McAfee made the jump to Microsoft to become the software giant's chief economist. McAfee's new duties include leading a team of economists to develop "new business models and metrics" and "marketplaces for advertising and apps," according to a blog post by Harry Shum, Microsoft executive vice president of technology and research. It's all part of a plan by Microsoft to focus on user data generated in day-to-day computing for continual learning and improvement. McAfee will also help develop government relations, policy and Microsoft economic strategy. Before joining Google in 2012, McAfee served as Yahoo chief economist for five years, obtained several patents, spent five years as a professor at California Institute of Technology and published two economics textbooks.
