Dell Technologies Cloud: 5 New Google, VMware, Kubernetes Offerings

From new Google Cloud storage and Kubernetes integrations to SD-WAN capabilities, here are five new capabilities and offerings for the Dell Technologies Cloud.

Dell Technologies Cloud Gets A Shot In The Arm

The innovation engine for the Dell Technologies Cloud is roaring as the infrastructure giant launches a slew of new offerings and capabilities for its flagship hybrid cloud platform including integration with Google Cloud, VMware Horizon and Kubernetes.

Deepak Patil, senior vice president and general manager of Cloud Platforms & Solutions at Dell Technologies, said the company’s Dell Technologies Cloud is bringing best-of-breed private and public cloud capabilities together for the data decade ahead.

“Data and workloads exist everywhere – at the edge, in core data centers and public clouds. And, while data and apps are multiplying, IT resources and budgets are not. For companies to turn their data into competitive differentiators, they need a way to manage it seamlessly and consistently, no matter where it resides,” said Patil, in a statement. “Dell Technologies Cloud brings the best of the public cloud to the data center and the best of the data center to the public cloud, removing complexity so companies can spend less time managing their infrastructure and more time delivering value to their customers.”

Here are five new offerings for the Dell Technologies Cloud unveiled on Wednesday.

Google Cloud Hybrid Storage Solution

Dell is doubling down on Google with the launch of Dell Technologies Cloud OneFS for Google Cloud. The new offering combines the scalability and performance of Dell EMC’s Isilon, the company’s scale-out network-attached storage platform, with Google Cloud’s analytics and compute services through a native cloud experience that uses the same core software.

Dell, the worldwide leader in storage, said customers now can easily move and access high performance computing and demanding workloads -- as large as 50 petabytes -- in a single file system between on-premises Dell Technologies file storage systems and Google Cloud without having to make changes or adjustments to their applications. With Dell Technologies Cloud OneFS for Google Cloud, customers can easily work across private and public clouds with consistent operations and have the flexibility to scale as needed.

Scott Millard, senior vice president, specialty sales, global channel, alliances and OEM at Dell Technologies, said partners who sell Dell Technologies Cloud OneFS for Google Cloud will earn a referral fee based on the contract value as well as tier credit in the Dell Technologies Partner Program.

“Partners are really digging into containers and Kubernetes and developing as-a-service offerings for cloud-native apps,” said Millard in an email to CRN. “They’re also deploying hybrid cloud for smaller customers, or looking to pilot hybrid cloud projects. And for the last few years, they’ve been using SD-WAN to transform customer networks for the cloud era. These enhancements ensure partners have exactly the right products and services to offer customers complete, modern, flexible, economical cloud solutions for the real world.”

Direct Path To Kubernetes

The Round Rock, Texas-based company is now providing a direct path to Kubernetes on the Dell Technologies Cloud Platform. The cloud platform now offers a simple path to Kubernetes from a single environment with support for containerized workloads and traditional virtual machines on the same VxRail infrastructure.

The company has integrated VMware Cloud Foundation version 4 and VxRail, the hyperconverged infrastructure market leading product that is jointly engineered between Dell EMC and VMware, into a single solution that enables a consistent approach across all cloud locations. VMware administrators can use familiar tools to manage modern apps that combine both containers and virtual machines from a single operating environment.

In a recent interview with CRN, VMware’s Chief Operating Officer Sanjay Poonen said his company is looking to become the dominant market leader in Kubernetes and containers.

Boosted SD-WAN In The Dell Technologies Cloud

The Dell Technologies Cloud is extending its networking capabilities with new updates from the Dell EMC SD-WAN Solution powered by VMware. Customers now have more appliance and bandwidth capability options for rapid deployment of SD-WAN in a single solution that helps improve performance for demanding workloads such as video, voice-over IP, video streaming and virtual desktop infrastructure, and ensure application performance and business continuity.

The Dell EMC SD-WAN Solution powered by VMware combines purpose-built networking appliances from Dell with SD-WAN software from VMware in an all-in-one solution for complete WAN modernization. SD-WAN enables customers to adapt to change and improve availability with features like dynamic multi-path optimization for savings over traditional MPLS-backed WAN designs, while also gaining performance for modern business applications.

New 42 Rack Unit And Support For VMware Horizon, PowerProtect

For customers seeking a cloud service, Dell announced the next-generation of VMware Cloud on Dell EMC – also known as Cloud Data Center-as-a-Service – featuring an enterprise scale 42 rack unit infrastructure. The 42 rack offering doubles the amount of supported processor cores, memory options and NVMe all-flash storage. VMware Cloud on Dell EMC offers data center as-a-service capabilities and provides customers with more simple and scalable infrastructure at their on-premises data center and edge locations.

Additionally, the cloud service is now certified with VMware Horizon to support business continuity efforts through the delivery of virtual desktops and applications to remote workforces as well as to healthcare workers in hospitals and clinics.

VMware Cloud on Dell EMC also introduced on Wednesday support for Dell EMC’s PowerProtect Cyber Recovery solution to better help protect customers’ workloads.

New Four-Node Options

The Dell Technologies Cloud is offering via the company’s consumption-based subscription program Dell Technologies On Demand, where channel partners can sell Dell’s broad set of solutions as-a-service to customers. Dell is now offering new node configuration options for the cloud platform that include as few as four nodes, allowing customers to transition to hybrid cloud at approximately half the cost and smaller footprint compared to before, according to Dell.

The Dell Technologies Cloud was initially launched last year as a hybrid cloud, data center as-a-service architecture that tightly integrates VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) on VxRail. The cloud architecture comes in two flavors. One offering, Dell Technologies Cloud Platform, includes VxRail and VCF with additional product options including Dell EMC servers, storage and networking products that can be sold and managed by channel partners. The other offering is Cloud Data Center-As-A-Service which includes VxRail, VCF and VMware management that is fully managed by Dell Technologies that can be sold by partners.
