5 Things We Learned About Intel's Newest NUC, The 'Smallest Premium VR System On The Market'
Intel's Mini PC For Enthusiasts
At CES 2018 this week, Intel took the wraps off its newest version of NUC, a "Next Unit of Computing" mini PC kit that systems builders can use for digital signage, media centers and kiosks.
The chip maker's new NUC, which Intel has claimed to be most lucrative for its channel partners and systems builders, comes on the heels of its launch of its newest eighth-gen Core Enthusiast processor with AMD graphics. Like this processor, the NUC, code-named Hades Canyon, also features AMD Radeon RX Vega M graphics. Intel also said its newest NUC is the smallest virtual reality-capable system ever made.
Here are five new features of Intel's new NUCs.
Two Models
Intel is offering two models for Hades Canyon – one powerful, more expensive version, and one less powerful but less expensive model.
The more powerful version packs an Intel Core i7-8809G chip with RX Vega M GH graphics, which can be overclocked. This model runs at clock speeds between 3.GH and 4.2GHz. Meanwhile, the slower version features an i7-8705G chip and clocks in between 3.1GHz and 4.1GHz.
Target Consumer
With the NUC's new AMD Graphics capabilities, the small-form-factor product is targeted for enthusiasts, and can act as a small PC for gaming consumers' living rooms. However, this year Intel is also targeting virtual reality, saying its NUC can power premium VR experiences at 90 FPS.
AMD Radeon Graphics
The NUC's biggest draw is that it features cutting-edge AMD Radeon graphics. AMD Radeon RX Vega M Graphics are custom discrete GPUs that integrate optimize low power, front-end and back-end processing and decreased silicon footprint. This comes on the heels of Intel's launch of its new eighth-generation Core enthusiast processor at CES, which is connected to a custom discrete Radeon RX Vega M graphics processor so that it features both speed and powerful graphics.
Ports
Like previous generations of NUC, Intel's newest form factor features an array of ports for its enthusiast target customer. The new model features two Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports, two Mini DisplayPorts, and two Gigabit Ethernet connections. The small form factor also touts four USB 3.1 Type-A connections, HDMI and an audio jack.
Pricing And Availability
Intel said its newest NUC, which comes in a 1.2 litre, 221 x 142 x 39mm box and is shipped with a mount, will be available in the spring. The chip company did not reveal details about the pricing of its new small form factor.
