HP Inc. and Lenovo held the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, in terms of mobile workstation sales through distributors during the first quarter of the year. But Dell is rising fast in the mobile workstation market and saw the largest market share gain during Q1, according to The NPD Group, of Port Washington, N.Y. The NPD Group tracks monthly technology sales-out information from the largest IT distributors and resellers in North America, down to the item level and with overlap removed.

5. MSI
Taiwan-based MSI barely held onto a position in the market for mobile workstations sold through distributors. The company's share of sales shrank to 0.2 percent during the first quarter of the year, down from 0.4 percent during the same period of 2017.
Among MSI's mobile workstations available through distributors is the WT72, aimed at designers and developers with a 17.3-inch FHD display, Intel Xeon E3 processor, 32 GB of RAM and Nvidia Quadro M4000M graphics.
4. Toshiba
Like MSI, Japan-based Toshiba held onto just a small fraction of the market for mobile workstations sold via distributors. Toshiba's market share dropped to 0.5 percent during Q1 from 0.7 percent the year before.
Toshiba's mobile workstations have included the Tecra W50, featuring a 15.6-inch FHD display, Intel Core i7 processor and Nvidia Quadro graphics. The Tecra W50 has been discontinued, however, according to CDW.com.
3. Dell
Round Rock, Texas-based Dell was the biggest gainer in mobile workstations during the first quarter, with the company's market share climbing to 23.8 percent, up from 17.5 percent during the same period a year earlier.
Dell's top-selling model during the quarter was the Precision 3520, according to The NPD Group. The mobile workstation offers a 15.6-inch display, Intel Core i7-7820HQ processor and Nvidia Quadro M620 graphics.
2. Lenovo
Amid Dell's surge, China-based Lenovo saw its market share in mobile workstations slip just a bit during Q1. The company's share came in at 34.3 percent during the quarter, compared to 35.7 percent the year before.
Lenovo's best-selling mobile workstation for the quarter was the ThinkPad P51, The NPD Group reported. The P51 features a 15.6-inch display (up to 4K resolution), Nvidia Quadro M2200 graphics, up to an Intel Core i7-7820HQ processor and up to 64 GB of RAM.
1. HP Inc.
Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP Inc. took the biggest hit to its share of mobile workstation sales through distributors as Dell grabbed market share. HP's sales amounted to 40.7 percent -- still keeping the company in the No. 1 spot -- but down from 46.1 percent during the same period a year earlier.
Along with leading in overall market share, HP also saw the top-selling mobile workstation through distributors during Q1, with the ZBook 15u G4, according to The NPD Group. The model offers a 15.6-inch (FHD or UHD/4K), a seventh-gen Intel Core processor (up to i7-7500U), AMD FirePro W4190M graphics and up to 32 GB of RAM.
