WATCH: Wasabi CEO David Friend Talks Packet Partnership And New Channel Offerings

Cloud storage provider Wasabi Technologies has stepped up its war on AWS. In an interview with CRNtv, CEO and Co-Founder David Friend discussed new compute services offered through a partnership with Packet and teased the announcement of new channel offerings in the coming months.

“We’re just scrambling to keep up with demand,” said Friend. “It took us five months to sell our first petabyte of storage. Now we sell a petabyte of storage every few days.”

Boston-based Wasabi launched in 2017 as an affordable alternative to the three major public cloud providers: AWS, Google and Microsoft. The company claims that it’s up to 6X faster than AWS S3 and 80 percent cheaper. And people are noticing: Friend says Wasabi is growing 20 percent each month and has over 5,000 paying customers.

To continue that growth, Friend says Wasabi is working on changes to its channel program, including new pricing and training. More details will be announced in the first quarter of 2019. Wasabi also announced a partnership with Packet, a cloud and edge computing infrastructure provider based in New York.

“Packet is doing for compute what we’re doing for storage. They recognize that customers want to pick and choose the right solutions for what they’re doing. When we met Packet, we said every application needs storage and compute. We, Wasabi, only do the storage part and Packet only does compute. So, we should get married somehow.”
