Adam Selipsky says Amazon Web Services (AMZN) is building the “ultimate tool chest” for generative AI by creating purpose-built AI hardware and software, while at the same time, partnering with third party AI providers.

“We continue to build the ultimate tool chest to help customers scale generative AI,” said AWS’ CEO on Twitter. “And at the heart of it is flexibility and choice, with enterprise-grade security.”

Selipsky is striving to enable his $85 billion cloud company to provide an end-to-end generative AI portfolio by offering its own—as well as third party—AI solutions to provide a full-stack.

Seattle-based AWS is seeking to provide more customer choice around non-AWS models for their generative AI applications by forming new partnerships with a variety of AI providers.

For example, AWS is investing heavily in building its own custom GPU chips. At the same time, AWS is doubling down on its partnership with chip giant Nvidia to power Amazon’s EC2 instances and other AI initiatives from AWS.

Another example is on the software front.

AWS has created its own AI foundation models with Titan and is writing its own software for training and tuning models. At the same time, AWS has formed multiple partnerships with the likes of Cohere, Anthropic and Stability AI to offer their own foundational models on top of AWS Bedrock, which the company touts as the easiest way to for business to build and scale generative AI-based applications.

AWS ‘Democratizing AI’ Strategy

At the company’s recent AWS Summit 2023 event, AWS executive Swami Sivasubramanian said through services like Amazon Bedrock and collaborations with other technology leaders like Nvidia and Anthropic, Amazon is “democratizing access to generative AI.”

“So wherever customers are on their machine learning journey, they can use AWS to innovate and create new products,” said Sivasubramanian, AWS vice president of database, analytics and machine learning.

In a recent LinkedIn post, Selipsky highlighted AWS’ mission of democratizing AI.

“When we talk about democratizing AI, this is what we mean—giving any company of any size access to transformative technology, and providing the right tools for the problem they are trying to solve for customers,” he said.

Seattle-based AWS Premier Partner Cascadeo said AWS’ strategy of democratizing AI will work if the cloud leader continues to expand its collaboration ecosystem.

“[AWS] has the customer base, the market share, the leadership team, and the technology that every GenAI provider wants,” said Jared Reimer, the founder, president and CTO of Cascadeo. “I think it’s a great idea for AWS to expand its wings and work with these startups and other providers to give more choice to our customers.”

AWS Generative AI Investments In 2023

This year, AWS has invested more in AI than any other space.

The company poured a whopping $100 million into building a new AWS Generative AI Innovation Center, which aims to help customers successfully build and deploy custom generative AI products and services. The new center will connect AWS AI and machine learning (ML) experts with customers around the globe.

The company continues to launch new or enhanced generative AI offerings alongside third parties.

For example, AWS recently introduced AppFabric, a no-code service that provides the integration of multiple Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications. Customers can integrate third-party applications within their IT environment using AppFabric in the AWS console, which cuts out the need for customized integrations and provides a unified view of application performance and usage.

AWS is also pushing startups to accelerate generative AI innovation to drive new customer adoption through its AWS Generative AI Accelerator startup program, where startups can receive up to $300,000 in AWS cloud credits.
